Terms and Conditions

Effective date: 9 August 2026

Welcome to Mau. These Terms and Conditions govern your access to and use of Mau, an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) application designed to support individuals who experience difficulty communicating through speech.

By creating an account, purchasing a subscription, downloading, accessing, or using Mau, you agree to these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree with these Terms, you must not use Mau.

1. Acceptance of terms

By using Mau, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms and Conditions.

If Mau is being used by a child or by an individual who requires assistance with account management, the parent, legal guardian, caregiver, or authorised organisation is responsible for ensuring that Mau is used in accordance with these Terms.

2. Intended use of Mau

Mau is an AAC application intended to support communication for individuals who have difficulty communicating through speech.

Mau may be used by individuals, parents, caregivers, educators, speech and language therapists, healthcare professionals, schools, rehabilitation centres, therapy centres, non-governmental organisations, and other authorised organisations.

Mau is a communication-support tool and does not replace professional assessment, diagnosis, treatment, or advice from a qualified professional.

3. User accounts

Certain features of Mau may require users to create an account.

Users are responsible for providing accurate information when creating an account and for maintaining the security of their account credentials.

Users must not knowingly provide their account credentials to unauthorised persons or permit unauthorised individuals to access their account.

4. Individual subscriptions

An individual Mau subscription is intended for one designated user.

An individual subscription may not be shared, transferred, resold, or used by multiple individuals.

The subscriber may access their Mau account on permitted personal devices where such access is supported by Mau. However, the subscription remains assigned to the designated user.

Sharing an individual Mau account with another person is prohibited.

5. Organisation subscriptions

Mau may provide subscription plans for organisations, including schools, special-needs schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, therapy centres, NGOs, and other institutions.

Organisation subscriptions are based on the number of designated Mau users rather than the total number of individuals within the organisation.

An organisation is responsible for purchasing a sufficient number of user licences for the individuals who are authorised to use Mau.

Each licence must be assigned to an authorised user.

6. User licences

Each Mau user licence permits access to Mau by one designated user.

An organisation may manage its authorised users and assign available licences to eligible users.

Where a designated user no longer requires Mau or is no longer associated with the organisation, the organisation may reassign that licence to another eligible user, subject to the applicable subscription plan.

An organisation may not use one individual licence as a shared licence for multiple users.

7. Professional and caregiver access

Mau may allow parents, caregivers, teachers, speech and language therapists, healthcare professionals, and other authorised individuals to assist an AAC user with the use and management of Mau.

Where Mau provides professional, caregiver, or administrator access, such access must only be used for authorised purposes.

Professional or caregiver access does not automatically make that person the designated AAC user.

8. Account and subscription sharing

Users must not:

  • Share individual Mau login credentials with another person.
  • Allow multiple unauthorised individuals to use one individual subscription.
  • Transfer an individual subscription to another person.
  • Resell or commercially distribute access to Mau without authorisation.
  • Use an individual subscription as a shared organisational account.
  • Attempt to bypass or circumvent Mau's subscription or licensing limits.

Mau may take reasonable measures to detect, prevent, and respond to unauthorised account sharing or misuse.

9. Subscriptions and payments

Certain features and services provided by Mau may require a paid subscription.

Subscription prices, billing periods, available plans, and applicable payment terms will be displayed before a subscription is purchased.

Where applicable, subscriptions may automatically renew unless cancelled in accordance with the applicable cancellation terms.

The user is responsible for ensuring that their payment information remains accurate and valid.

10. Cancellation

A user may cancel their Mau subscription in accordance with the cancellation procedures provided through Mau or the applicable application store.

Cancellation of a subscription may prevent future subscription charges but does not necessarily entitle the user to a refund for a period that has already been paid for, except where required by applicable law or the applicable payment platform.

11. Customisation and communication content

Mau may allow users and authorised professionals to customise communication boards, vocabulary, categories, symbols, languages, and other communication features.

Users and organisations are responsible for ensuring that customised communication content is appropriate for the intended AAC user.

Mau does not guarantee that customised content will be suitable for every individual's communication, educational, clinical, or personal needs.

12. Privacy and personal information

Mau may collect and process information necessary to provide its services, maintain user accounts, process subscriptions, provide support, maintain security, and improve the application.

Mau will handle personal information in accordance with its Privacy Policy.

Where Mau is used on behalf of another person, including a child, the person creating or managing the account must have the appropriate authority to provide and manage that person's information.

13. Children and vulnerable users

Where Mau is used by a child or an individual requiring assistance with account management, the parent, legal guardian, caregiver, or authorised organisation is responsible for supervising the appropriate use of the application.

Parents, guardians, caregivers, and organisations are responsible for ensuring that Mau is used in a manner appropriate to the user's needs.

14. Intellectual property

Mau, including its software, design, interface, branding, graphics, features, and original content, is protected by applicable intellectual property laws.

Unless expressly permitted by Mau or applicable law, users must not copy, reproduce, modify, distribute, sell, lease, reverse engineer, or commercially exploit Mau or any part of the application.

Use of Mau does not transfer ownership of Mau or its intellectual property to the user.

15. Acceptable use

Users must use Mau lawfully and in accordance with these Terms.

Users must not use Mau to engage in unlawful activities, attempt to compromise the security of the application, interfere with the operation of Mau, or gain unauthorised access to another user's account or information.

16. Service availability

Mau will make reasonable efforts to maintain the availability and functionality of the application.

However, Mau does not guarantee that the application will always be available, uninterrupted, secure, or free from errors.

Mau may temporarily suspend access where necessary for maintenance, security updates, technical improvements, or circumstances beyond its reasonable control.

17. Application updates

Mau may periodically release updates, improvements, security patches, modifications, or new features.

Users may be required to install certain updates in order to continue using particular features or services.

Mau reserves the right to modify, add, suspend, or discontinue features where reasonably necessary.

18. Suspension or termination

Mau may suspend or terminate a user's account or access where there is reasonable evidence of:

  • Violation of these Terms and Conditions.
  • Unauthorised account sharing.
  • Fraudulent or unlawful activity.
  • Misuse of Mau.
  • Attempts to circumvent subscription or licensing restrictions.
  • Conduct that may compromise the security, integrity, or operation of Mau.

Where reasonably appropriate, Mau may provide the user with an opportunity to resolve the relevant violation before termination.

19. Disclaimer

Mau is designed to support communication and is not a substitute for professional medical, clinical, educational, or therapeutic assessment or intervention.

Mau does not guarantee a particular communication, educational, clinical, or therapeutic outcome.

Users should seek appropriate professional assistance where required.

20. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Mau and its owners, developers, employees, contractors, and service providers shall not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or other losses arising from the use of, or inability to use, Mau.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.

21. Changes to these terms

Mau may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time.

Where significant changes are made, Mau may provide appropriate notice through the application or other reasonable communication channels.

Continued use of Mau after the effective date of updated Terms constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms, to the extent permitted by applicable law.

22. Governing law

These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Zambia.

23. Contact

For questions, concerns, complaints, or support relating to Mau or these Terms and Conditions, users may contact Mau through the official support channels provided within the application, or by email at expressme.aac@gmail.com.

24. Agreement

By creating an account, purchasing a subscription, or accessing or using Mau, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms and Conditions.
